Every Day with Jesus

Transitioning 60 years of Selwyn Hughes' print legacy into an app

Every Day with Jesus is a free daily devotional enjoyed by thousands of people around the world (historically in print). It includes daily readings and prayers, along with suggestions for further study and discussion. They wanted our help to take the legacy of this daily reading to an even greater audience with the development of a new app.

We worked with the team to develop and build their own app, bringing the opportunity to expand their reach and engage with a wider audience. In order to successfully launch, Every Day with Jesus required a new brand identity which would encourage their current audience to follow them over to their app.

Brand

To achieve this, we supported them in redesigning their brand and evolving their visuals. One of the key aims was that the app was user-friendly and felt accessible to a wide age range; these themes remained a priority throughout the design and brand process. A key driver was accessibility for a variety of users. We wanted to ensure that the app was clever to read and easy to use. To achieve this, we focused on colours and fonts to make them neurodiverse and age friendly, ensuring there is good readability for the app. As well as this, we added a screen reader for the navigation and calendar, further improving the accessibility of the app.

Design

While the brand would primarily be implemented in the app, it was important that it also be versatile enough to work across other areas, such as print. We recently put this new identity into action when we designed the book cover for their one-year collection of daily devotional content.

With such a rich history of ideas and content, one of our challenges was helping them streamline their ideas into MVP and focus on their target market. Our design team used bold colours whilst still maintaining the heritage of EDWJ, re-invigorating their classic look.

Impact

Part of the project specification was building in ‘gamification’ in a way that sits just below the surface, subtle yet user-friendly. We used streaks to encourage users with ‘well done’ messaging so they feel like they’re going on a journey, celebrating achievements and new features.

This project was a huge team effort, moving across all different departments; UX, brand and development. We love how the creative ideas flowed seamlessly into the brand, influencing the UX and UI (and vice versa), resulting in a refined and efficient development build. Our partnership meant we could also quickly explore the second version, adding yet more functionality, whilst staying true to the core values that we established at the beginning of the project.

The move from print to digital is big, and we partnered closely with the EDWJ team, problem-solving together and helping users find the transition seamless. We are inspired and excited for the next steps, bringing them into a focused future with longevity and ambitious aims, we love seeing a project bring lasting change and this is one we love shouting about.
